Acupuncture

Acupuncture can provide support for cancer patients during and after their conventional treatment. It helps to alleviate many of the symptoms.

Jo Hull, Lic Acu MBAcC, is an experienced Traditional Acupuncturist with specialist skills and training in cancer support. Her treatments can often be claimed on private health insurance. She is registered with most major insurance companies including BUPA and AXA PPP.

Used alongside your cancer treatment, acupuncture can safely and effectively help relieve the side effects you may experience including;

*Nausea *Vomiting *Lethargy *Anxiety *Insomnia *Hot Flushes *Dry Mouth *Depression *Headaches *Pain

Jo has undertaken training in oncology acupuncture with the world renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY. She currently treats oncology patients at The Spire Montiefiore Hospital, Hove and at her private practise in Brighton and Hove. She also volunteers at The Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton, where patients (cancer survivors and their families) can benefit from 6 free Acupuncture sessions.

Recommended treatment plan

You can start your acupuncture sessions at anytime, before, during or after your hospital treatment. If you are able to start before your therapy you will get the chance to experience the benefits separately to the effects of your medicine.

If your first treatment is during your therapy this is absolutely fine and will not detract from the benefits. Treatment does tend to be cumulative so, if possible, weekly sessions are recommended. It’s not always possible to follow the recommended treatment plan, for many reasons, it is better to have whatever you can manage. Home visits can sometimes be arranged.

Individual treatment plans will be put together at your first session. Please note that Chemotherapy patients are advised to have acupuncture either the day before or of their treatment.

Nutrition

Good nutrition supports good health. It can help you feel better and make your body stronger.

Whether you are newly diagnosed or have completed treatment now is a good time to focus on good nutrition. Both your cancer and cancer treatment can affect how your body absorbs nutrients. It is important to review your eating habits as usual healthy eating guidelines may not be suitable during this time.

It’s really important to keep up your body weight and support healthy tissue renewal which in turn can help you to fight infection.

Sandra James ND, will work with you to create a personalised, achievable plan to help to support you. According to the Government’s nutritional goals for cancer patients the aim of nutritional treatment is to;

· Decrease unwanted side effects such as lack of appetite, dry mouth, nausea, constipation
· Optimise your strengh and energy
· Support the immune system (often compromised during treatment) to fight infection
· Help the body recover and heal

Recommended treatment plan

Working with Sandra is not about restriction and deprivation in any way.

At your first consultation Sandra discusses your health and lifestyle to determine how she can best support you. After this session Sandra creates a personalised nutrition plan to help you feel better. This includes recommendations of foods, supplements, and lifestyle. She has an incredibly positive and supportive approach and her plans are achievable and enjoyable.

Follow up appointments are often 6 weeks later, with the option of phone calls rather than coming to clinic.

Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy

Osteopathy deals with whole body health, not disease. It supports your body’s natural ability to maintain itself, helping it work more effectively. It’s based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual relies on the way that bones, muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and internal structures work with each other.

As Osteopath Philip Owen explains “We do not diagnose, offer a cure or any substitute for conventional surgery, chemo or radiotherapy, we can help restore wellbeing to newly diagnosed patients and enable natural healing after hospital physicians have done their work.”

Cancer Research UK says

“Some people who use osteopathy say it can help to control pain and tension. They also say that it helps them to relax, which improves their overall feeling of health and well being.”

Our Osteopath Frithe (Master Osteopath M.Ost) will take the time to understand you, and your unique combination of symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. From that she will formulate a treatment plan that will achieve the best outcome.

Cancer Research UK, says “Homeopathy is one of the most common complementary therapies used by people with cancer. People use it because it may help them feel better or more in control of their situation.

Homeopathy for people with cancer is promoted as a natural way to help you relax and cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. It is also promoted as a way of controlling symptoms and side effects such as pain, sickness and tiredness. Homeopaths believe it can treat a wide range of symptoms and conditions.”
